Here is the minor rust on my rocker panels I was talking about. This is the passenger side, but the drivers side is pretty similar.
For everyone else what we are looking at is the beginning of the tin worm on the rocker panels of my 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier with 201,200 kms Krown rust spray. I swear by it. Not bad for 12 years of rust belt.

Our Nissan was only a year older and had many many holes. Only 83k miles on it too. It’s due to be crushed into a cube. Yours has held up pretty well.

Wow, and your guys winters are a lot less harsh aren’t they? Here we have salt all over the damn place because the avg temp in feb is -16C.

Yeah the winters are really mild. Maybe 20 days out of the year the roads get salted. Rarely see more than a week of snow and thats only a few centimetres deep at most.
These Nissan Micras just rust really really badly. Metal so thin you can dent it by lightly pushing it, no real protection of any kind and thin paint.

I guess so. The Cavaliers paint despite being a budget beater is actually pretty thick.

From what (admittedly little) I’ve seen of modern American market cars the quality of non essentials like interior and such are poorer, but the cars are built to last engine and body wise. We seem to be the other way around. VWs have really nice interior quality but every single one of them over 10 years old has rusted.
Thankfully my car has one of my favourite things, plastic wings (fenders). No rust and no dents.

Interesting. The Cavalier interior is what you would call spartan. It has heat, and am/fm/cd. That’s it. No power anything, no other options. No AC

Same here. My car’s feature list is remote central locking and electric windows, that’s pretty much it. Honestly I like it that way, my car is so simple there’s not much to go wrong. I’d sooner have something that should survive a long while with less features than the other way around. Mine is a bit of a rarity for newish european cars, even the small stuff now has infotainment screens and overstressed turbo engines.

I would wire wheel the crap out of that and hit it with some naval jelly, then paint it with POR-15. Dont even try and sand it or you will just burn through sandpaper and still leave rust

Do you think a dremmel would work for the wire wheel or do I have to get an angle grinder?
![]() 05/07/2015 at 08:39 |

nah just grab a 5$ wheel for your drill or cordless

Or, if he has a 4” grinder, that’s the way to go.

doesnt sound like he does to me. Grinder would blow through those shitty rockers though if you arent careful

Oh ok. Good to know.

Nope. Don’t have.

I meant a wire wheel or cup brush on the grinder, but that can also get out of hand. Drills don’t really offer the same ability to dig in.

yeah, assuming novice level work is going down I would set him loose with a drill first - and it is cheaper. Will certainly take longer. My 18V cordless has actually done more surface rust repair than it should have and can give you the torque you need to get into it.

I already own a drill so that is a plus. This will be my first foray into rust repair.
Also this is the list...let me know if things are missing:
-Naval jelly
-Wire disk for drill
-POR 15
-Paint brush (any recommendations on type?)
-Degreasing cleaner to clean metal after scrubbing.
-paint tray
-Paint thinner for running over metal onced it’s been cleaned and degreased.
-Profuse amount of painters tape to affix to door/ other areas to protect paint.
-1000 grit sand paper
The game plan is:
Take wire wheel and sand off all rust.
paint tape all close areas.
apply naval jelly (with brush)
wait 10 to 15 minutes.
wash off naval jelly (do not have hose...must think about how to accomplish...super soaker...lol but sort of serious)
-sand remaining area with 1000 grit.
-use degreasing cleaner to clean metal
-run paint thinner over metal on rag.
Let dry.
Paint on POR 15
Let dry.
Let me know if you think I am missing any steps or ingredients.
Best

Jetta’s getting to that point too, and no matter how much I pester my brother about it, he WILL NOT get it checked out.

Luckily or unluckily I only have myself to blame for the state of my car. I think I have a good plan in place. I’ll be getting some stuff for the project on saturday.

I think that is a solid plan right there. Sorry I missed this reply! Use a cheap ass chip brush because it will be junk by the time you are done. Supersoaker is a fine idea! Let us know how it works out!

Definitely will. Thanks for the help!!

I hate living cheque to cheque so much. Looks like due to stupid “moneys” this may now be a July project, we will see what happens. But it’s still on the agenda fo sho. (Vacation in June so that rules that out) lol.

Ok. I bought everything I need except the POR 15. I went to see Opponaut “CB” at Cambodian Tire and the stuff was CAD $60 /qt. Holy fuck. Upon examination you can order it online at $40/qt. I’ll probably order that tomorrow. While that’s going on, I’m going to start with the drill and begin removing some of the rust with the wire brush I bought for it.
